The Positive Benefits of Listening to Music – Experience the Power of Music
Can you imagine getting through life without music? Music is such a vital and essential part of our lives. We hear music in the supermarkets, television, movies, sporting events, churches, and so many others venues. Easy going music is playing in the supermarkets – makes you more relaxed to shop more.
And can you imagine a movie without music? The music enhances and creates the mood of what you are seeing on the screen. Music has so many positive benefits and enhances our mood, emotions and yes, even our health.
Music has the power to transport you to a new level of reality. Pop in some music in the car and BOOM, you are gliding down the highway with a boost of energy. Working out? Pop in some music and enhance your work outs. Meditating? Pop in some music and transcend your meditation to higher levels. Being a musician myself, I can testify that not only by listening to music has wonderful benefits in your life, but by making music as well.
Scientist has been studying the positive benefits of listening to music for ages and to some degrees has only scratched the surface. What is this power that exists in music? It can be a mystery. But the truth of the matter is we are designed to notice the difference between noise and music. It’s very rare to find someone who does NOT like music at all. In fact, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like music. Music comes in so many forms, styles and genres – there’s literally something for everyone to benefit.
So lets take a closer look at some of the benefits of listening to music…
Improves Mood
While the effects of music on our mood are not fully understood, its proven that when we listen to music to our liking, it releases a chemical called dopamine which literally improves your mood. Ever been in a gloomy mood and you heard a song that literally encouraged you, made you feel better, and pumped you up with energy? Before you knew it, you were in a great mood. That’s the power of music releasing dopamine in your body.
Reduces Stress/Lessens Anxiety
Billy Joel said it best, “I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from.”
Music can be powerful and healing in our lives. Listening to music you enjoy decreases the stress hormone cortisol in our bodies. This is done naturally. Additionally, by listening to “calming music” (generally, slow tempo, low pitch and no lyrics) has been shown to also reduce stress and lower anxiety levels.
Listening to meditation music also has the same effect.
And did you know that listening to Bird Music actually can lower anxiety levels? Just think about how calming and relaxing to hear birds in the morning. It brings peace and serenity. It helps connects us with nature and brings us into natural alignment. Click Here to read more on how you can add Bird Music into your daily routine and most importantly how it can reduce stress and lower anxiety levels in your life.
Who would have known? Grateful for those birds!
Reduces Pain
Bob Marley says it best, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” The postive effects it has on the body literally can make you forget you were even in pain. In one study of patients recovering from surgery, it was proven that those who listened to music before, during and after experience less pain that those who didn’t utilize music as part of their treatment and care.
So next time you are in pain – try listening to some music. It actually just may wipe that pain away!
Strengthens Learning & Memory
It has been discovered that listening to music you enjoy helps you learn and recall information better. If you are a musician, then this even more increases your leaning and memory skills. Either way, however, listening to some music will help to increase this in our life. Studying for a test or exam? Listen to some classical music and you’ll find it easier to remember what you are studying.
Studies have proven that those with music lessons predicts higher IQ and academic performance.
Keeps Brain Healthy
As we discussed in the previous paragraph, music can help strengthen our learning and memory which ultimately helps keep our brain healthy. Studies has also shown that those who actually plays a musical instrument scored higher on cognitive tests. Ever wanted to play an instrument or sing? Go and take some lessons! Not only will you keep a healthy brain, you will experience the benefits of making music and the joy that it provides.
Making music is not just for professional musicians. Anyone can make music with some guidance and practice. It’s true that some are born with natural musical abilities, but I do believe that if you have a strong enough desire, you can accomplish anything in your life.

Improves Sleep
30% of Americans suffer from insomnia! If you are one of them, have no fear! You can improve your sleep with some calming meditative or classical music. Studies show that if you listen to this music 45 mins before going to bed, you will improve your sleep. They even have sleep headphones that you can literally listen to music all night long (I don’t have insomnia, but this is what I like to do to relax the mind and feed the subconscious while I sleep). You’ll wake up more refreshed.
So grab some Mozart or Bach and get a good nights rest!
Helps You Eat Less
I have known the many benefits of listening to music, but never considered that it actually helps you eat less! I am sure you are wondering how is this possible? Well studies shown from Georgia Tech University that with soft lightening and music, it actually helps you consume fewer calories and allow you to enjoy your meal much better.
I am all about ambiance – so candles, a fire place, dim lightening, soft music. Works for me!
Makes You Happier
As we discovered earlier, listening to music can improve your mood. And not only that, it actually makes you happier. Imagine that? It releases that “feel-good” neurotransmitter, dopamine leaving you feeling happy, joyful and excited. So next time you need an emotional boost to experience happiness – try listening to your favorite music. I am a witness, it does the job and it does it well.
I Have a Playlist For That!
I am sure you are feeling good now just learning of all the wonderful benefits of listening to music can do for you. One thing I do is create a playlist for every mood on Spotify. Here are couple of my playlists that you can follow and enjoy! There are thousands of songs loaded.
These are just a “few” of my playlists. I practically have a playlist for everything. (And yes, I listen to Christmas music all year long in case you are wondering LOL)
I also have a “Feeling Good” playlist. You know when you are not even thinking about it and you suddenly hear a song and it instantly provides you a jolt of energy and positivity. The song that you yell out, “Yeah – that’s MY song!!”. I didn’t include my “Feeling Good” playlist here because these are the songs that does it for me. You can create your own.
Another idea is if you have a strong love for music, consider taking some lessons and learn an instrument. Piano? (my love and passion!) Flute? (my first instrument!) Violin? Drums? Or even taking some vocal lessons. As a musician, I can tell you that listening to music is one thing, but to actually make music – it takes your soul and body to a new level of reality.

Great post brother LT and I can personally attest to ALL of these benefits you've mentioned. In answer to your question, NO i couldn't go through life without music. It brings so much color to life, and emotion like you've outlined beautifully here in this post. Thank you for the music of LT Turner!
Listening to music is definitely one of my favorite pasttimes. My parents played music around the house ever since I was a kid and listening to certain songs takes me back to my childhood. I never knew that listening to music helps with remembering information. I plan on putting that to good use when I need to memorize something. Excellent post! :)
I totally agree with all of these benefits. And I have a playlist for EVERYTHING! I even have one for cleaning my house and I'm always amazed that cleaning actually raises my vibration and makes me feel AMAZING because of the music I listen to while I do it! We were just talking yesterday (me and my kids) about how cool it is that one of Billie Eilish's songs will be the theme song for the new James Bond movie. We love her music... and we know how moving it will be and how much it will add to the movie (and she's only 18, which makes it even cooler). :) Anyway, I couldn't agree more... life without music would…
Great post! I never realized all the benefits listening to music provides. Thank you for all the thorough research!
